Why does Tim prefer Sonos?
Sonos is simple for the people who live with it. One app runs every speaker in the house, you can add rooms over time, and it works with the music services most people already pay for.
Tim can install or troubleshoot almost any home audio or theater system, but Sonos is the one he recommends most often. Here is why:
- One app for every room. Play music in the kitchen, turn up the TV in the living room or group the whole house, all from your phone.
- Start small, add later. Begin with a soundbar or a single speaker. Add a sub, surrounds or another room next year, and it joins the same system.
- Works with your streaming services. Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and many others play inside the Sonos app. Many Sonos speakers also support Apple AirPlay 2.
- Voice control, if you want it. Many Sonos speakers have built-in microphones and work with Amazon Alexa or Sonos’s own voice control, depending on the model.
- Better TV sound without a receiver. A Sonos soundbar connects to the TV with one HDMI cable, so the TV remote controls the volume.
What Sonos systems do we install?
We install everything from a single soundbar to a whole-home system. Every room is different, so Sonos work starts with a free estimate.
Soundbars, subs and surrounds
A Sonos soundbar under a mounted TV is the most common job. We connect it with HDMI so the TV remote works the volume, then add a subwoofer and a pair of rear surround speakers if you want a fuller home theater sound. Each speaker needs power, so we plan outlet locations before anything goes on the wall.
Music in more than one room
Kitchens, bedrooms, offices and decks can each have their own speaker, grouped in the app. For decks and patios, we suggest portable or outdoor-rated speakers rather than indoor models.
In-wall and in-ceiling speakers with a Sonos Amp
For a clean look, passive in-wall or in-ceiling speakers can be powered by a Sonos Amp, so they show up in the same app as the rest of the system. This works in framed walls and ceilings. Solid log walls and stone can’t be fished for wire, so we suggest surface-mounted speakers there instead.
How does a Sonos install work?
A Sonos install starts with the room and the Wi-Fi, then the speakers. Here is the usual order:
- Plan the room. We look at where you sit, where the TV is and where outlets are.
- Check the Wi-Fi. Sonos streams over your home network, so a weak signal means dropouts. Logs and stone fireplaces block Wi-Fi, and near the lake we check what works at your address first. See smart home and Wi-Fi.
- Mount and wire. We mount the soundbar and speakers and run low-voltage speaker wire for an Amp setup. Power cords never run inside walls; new outlets are a job for a licensed electrician.
- Set up and tune. We add every speaker to the app, link your music services and use the app’s sound tuning for the room.
- Walk-through. Tim shows you how to play music, group rooms and control the TV sound.
Do you work on other brands too?
Yes. Sonos is Tim’s favorite, not the only thing he works on. We install and troubleshoot receivers, passive surround systems, other soundbars and older whole-home audio. If you already own a system that is acting up, Tim can usually find out why. See home audio and home theater.
What does Sonos setup cost?
Sonos setup is quoted with a free estimate, because the price depends on how many speakers, whether any go in walls or ceilings, and how much Wi-Fi work the house needs. If you are also mounting a TV, Advanced Mounting from $325 already includes setting up a two-speaker audio system. See pricing or request an estimate.
