Which voice assistant should I pick for my home?

Pick the voice assistant that matches the phones and TV your household already uses. iPhone homes with an Apple TV or HomePod fit Apple Home. Android and Google TV homes fit Google. Fire TV homes fit Alexa. All three now support Matter, so the choice is less permanent than it used to be.

For a cabin where the internet goes down, local control matters more than the brand. More on that below.

How do Alexa, Google and Apple Home compare?

Here is a side-by-side based on each company’s own documentation. Features change often, so check current details before you buy.

A note on Google’s change to Gemini

Google is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini for Home on its speakers and displays. Once a home opts in, it cannot switch back, and some advanced features need a paid Google Home Premium plan. The basic upgrade is free. If you are buying Google devices now, plan on Gemini.

What is Matter and why does it matter?

Matter is a shared smart home standard that lets one plug, lock or light work with Alexa, Google and Apple. Buy Matter devices and you can change assistants later without replacing everything.

Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. Thread is a low-power mesh network for small devices like sensors and locks, and it needs a Thread border router: a hub that links Thread devices to your Wi-Fi. Each ecosystem above has devices that do this job.

What works when the internet goes down?

Matter devices can keep working on your home network when the internet drops, as long as the hub is on. Google and Amazon both say Matter control runs locally, and Apple routes control through its home hub. Voice requests are a different story: Alexa now sends voice to the cloud, so Alexa voice commands need internet.

That matters at the lake, where homes run on DSL, fixed wireless, T-Mobile Home Internet or Starlink, and an outage can last hours. Strong Wi-Fi helps too; see our mesh Wi-Fi guide for log homes and Starlink.

Is Home Assistant a better choice for an off-grid cabin?

Home Assistant is the strongest option when you want everything to run locally. It is open-source software that runs on a small computer in your home, keeps your data local, works as a Matter controller and connects to a large range of devices. Its own voice assistant, Assist, can run entirely on your hardware.

The trade-off is setup and upkeep. It suits owners who want local control and do not mind a system that someone configures and keeps updated.

Which one fits your situation?

Choose by how you live, not by the logo. These rules of thumb cover most homes.

  1. Everyone has an iPhone and you want privacy: Apple Home with a HomePod mini or Apple TV as the home hub.
  2. Android phones and a Google TV: Google, with a Google TV Streamer or Nest hub as the Matter hub.
  3. Fire TV in every room: Alexa, with Echo devices as speakers and hubs.
  4. Mixed phones in the household: Choose the assistant that matches your TV streaming device, and buy Matter devices so nothing is locked in.
  5. Cabin with unreliable internet: Matter devices plus a local hub, or Home Assistant for full local control.
  6. Vacation rental: Keep guest-facing voice devices simple, and remember guests will talk near them. See our vacation rental checklist.

FAQ

Common questions

Which voice assistant is best for a cabin with spotty internet?

For a cabin where the internet drops, the best choice is a setup that keeps working locally. Matter devices on an Alexa, Google or Apple hub can still be controlled at home without the cloud, and Home Assistant with its Assist voice assistant can run entirely on your own hardware. Mounted and More can help plan a local-first smart home around Vallecito Lake and Bayfield.

Should I pick Alexa, Google or Apple for my home?

Match your phones and TV. iPhone homes with an Apple TV or HomePod fit Apple Home. Android homes with Google TV fit Google. Fire TV homes fit Alexa. All three support Matter, so many plugs, locks and lights work with any of them. Mounted and More helps homeowners in Durango, Bayfield and Vallecito choose and sets up the whole system.

Can I control my TV with my voice?

Yes. Alexa works through Fire TV devices and the Alexa Voice Remote, Google through Google TV devices such as the Google TV Streamer, and Siri through the Siri Remote on Apple TV. The easiest setup uses the streaming device from the same family as your assistant. Mounted and More programs voice and TV control together in Vallecito, Forest Lakes and Durango homes.
